Pall Mall Cosmetics | Tanya Bardsley Abdominoplasty

What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck (or abdominoplasty) is a type of cosmetic surgery to make the patient’s abdomen tighter, thinner, and firmer by removing excess, sagging skin.

Simply put, it is designed to improve the overall aesthetic of a person’s body, with patients typically undergoing the procedure if they are unhappy with the shape of the abdomen.

There are a variety of reasons why patients may seek tummy tuck surgery.

Abdominal obesity:

Typically, it is to remedy abdominal obesity, where the patient has excess fat deposits in the abdominal area, or excess abdominal skin, that they want to get rid of. A tummy tuck will remove any of this excess and tighten the abdominal muscles, as well as alleviate any stretch marks on the abdomen.

Post-pregnancy belly:

A tummy tuck can be used to alleviate a bulging abdomen or poochy belly, which may be caused by loose abdominal skin after pregnancy.

Post weight-loss sagging skin:

If you have excess skin after losing a lot of weight, a tummy tuck can help to remove any sagging that won’t shift with dieting and exercise.

Undecided about a tummy tuck? Everything that you need to know about what happens during the procedure is outlined below.

Or, get in touch with Pall Mall today to discuss your options with one of our experts and to book your initial consultation.

What happens during tummy tuck surgery?
  1. During your tummy tuck, you’ll be placed under general anaesthetic and an incision will be made in your lower abdominal area.
  2. Then, excess skin and fat are removed.
  3. After that, through abdominal wall reconstruction surgery, the connective tissue in your abdomen (fascia) will usually be tightened with sutures to ensure firmness.
  4. The remaining skin and belly button are then repositioned to create a more toned look through the stretched abdominal muscles and to ensure there is no ‘hanging belly’.
How long does it take?

The whole tummy tuck procedure can take up to 3 hours, and the length of stay in the hospital depends on the patient, but usually varies from a day to a few nights.

Following the tummy tuck surgery, your abdomen will be somewhat swollen and bruised, and you may experience numbness to the skin around the area –  this means you will not be able to drive after leaving the hospital.

The numbness and swelling should ease within the following few days.

Around 10-12 weeks after the operation, the abdominal area will begin to feel less numb and more like your own again. Any fluid retention will begin to recede by this point. During the recovery period, the patient should not do any heavy lifting or strenuous exercise.

Different Types of Tummy Tucks

Here at Pall Mall, we offer a variety of different tummy tuck procedures. The procedure you undergo will depend entirely on:

  • How much excess abdominal skin and fat that you need removed
  • If your abdominal muscles have been stretched (for example, from a pregnancy)
  • Your desired results

This will all be discussed and decided with you in your 20–45-minute professional consultation.

Nowadays, it’s becoming more common to combine a tummy tuck with liposuction surgery to remove the persistent pockets of fat that simply won’t melt away through diet and exercise, leaving you with a slimmer, firmer core.

If you are unsure about which tummy tuck surgery you need, you can book a free initial consultation with our highly experienced surgeons to discuss your options.

Full Tummy Tuck

Post pregnancy or major weight loss (and even just the natural ageing process) can leave behind stubborn fat and excess, sagging skin around the abdominal area, which simply can’t be removed through exercise, dieting, or non-invasive treatments.

This can be incredibly frustrating and can impact your self-confidence.

A full tummy tuck (or, more specifically an abdominoplasty with muscle repair surgery) will enhance the shape of your abdomen by removing excess fat and tightening the abdominal muscles resulting in a slim, refined look.

What happens during a full tummy tuck?

  1. The procedure is performed under a general anaesthetic, and an incision will be made in the lower abdomen.
  2. The excess fat and skin are removed from the abdomen before tightening the connective tissue in the abdomen. Liposuction is also sometimes used to get rid of stubborn areas of fat and loose skin.
  3. Once the excess has been removed, the remaining skin and belly button are then repositioned, resulting in a more toned, firm, and aesthetic look.

The full tummy tuck procedure typically takes anywhere between 1-5 hours and involves removing excess skin and fat as well as tightening the abdominal muscles through abdominal wall reconstruction.

That said, it is important to note that a full tummy tuck is not a quick fix for weight loss. Instead, it is typically used to remove the excess skin and fat once a person has reached a healthy BMI.

Following tummy tuck surgery, our patients tell us that they are finally able to wear fitted clothes and swimwear that simply wasn’t possible before the procedure, and have massively improved levels of confidence.

After a successful surgery:

  • Most patients will then need to stay in the hospital typically for one or two nights.
  • Once you have been discharged, you will leave the hospital with pain relief, dressings, and a specialised corset on your tummy, or tummy control pants.
  • You will not be able to drive, and therefore someone should be present to drive you home.
  • It is recommended that you have someone stay with you for the following 24 hours after leaving the hospital as a precaution.
  • The corset provided should be worn for 6 weeks for your comfort and to help with healing.
  • You should also avoid any arduous or physical sports and gym activity during the first 4-6 weeks post-surgery and take time off work. The time taken for the latter depends entirely on your job, with most people requiring at least 2-3 weeks off in order for your body to focus on healing faster for a full recovery and minimise any fluid retention.

Your aftercare package with Pall Mall will include a full programme of post-operative care, entitling you to 2 years of aftercare. This will involve clinical review/checks of your wounds to make sure you are healing well.

Mini Tummy Tuck

The mini tummy tuck is another form of tummy tuck with muscle repair surgery offered by Pall Mall.

Mini tummy tuck surgery is a less invasive type of tummy tuck and is recommended for patients with lesser levels of excess abdominal fat and stubborn loose skin that won’t go away despite dieting and exercise.

Typically, patients who are better suited to a mini tummy tuck procedure are those who are within the healthy weight range but have a small ‘pooch’ between the belly button and pubic region.

This small stubborn area of fat and loose skin is typically caused from pregnancy or rapid weight gain, and it doesn’t always go away with dieting or exercise – which can be highly frustrating for patients and can lead to damaged self-confidence.

The mini tummy tuck offered by Pall Mall is far less invasive than the full abdominoplasty with muscle repair surgery. That said, it is still a highly effective way to get rid of that stubborn belly fat and loose skin – with permanent results – ensuring that your self-confidence is restored, and you can fit into your old clothes again.

Unlike the full tummy tuck, the mini tummy tuck is a smaller, more acute procedure.

Therefore, it will not flatten your entire stomach, as it targets only the lower part of your abdominal region – similarly, it will not alter the position of your belly button.

It is not designed for patients with particularly high levels of excess fat or loose skin – but, don’t worry, the type of tummy tuck best suited to you will be discussed in your 20–45-minute professional consultation.

What happens during a mini tummy tuck?

  1. During the procedure, the surgeon will place you under a general anaesthetic, and a horizontal incision will be made above your pubic hairline.
  2. If your abdominal muscles have stretched – for example, due to pregnancy – they will be sewn together so that they tighten and become firmer. However, this is often not needed with this surgery, and more commonly occurs in a full tummy tuck.
  3. If there is still some stubborn fat remaining, our expert surgeons may use abdominal liposuction to remove it.
  4. The skin is then pulled around the abdomen, and any excess skin is removed.

With the mini tummy tuck, the surgery is only performed on the lower part of the abdomen – the result is a far more toned, tight, and aesthetic core region.

After a successful mini tummy tuck:

  • Most patients will need to stay in a hospital typically for one or two nights.
  • You will see some results immediately post-operation, but once the swelling goes down over the course of the next 6 weeks you will see the full results.
  • Once you have been discharged, you will leave the hospital with pain relief, dressings, and a specialised corset on your tummy, or tummy control pants, that will aid in your recovery.
  • You will not be able to drive immediately after the surgery, and therefore should have someone available to drive you home (a precaution, but we also recommend that someone stay with you for 24 hours after your surgery).
  • You should keep your corset on for 6 weeks post-surgery to ensure optimal healing and comfort during the aftercare process.
  • Please refrain from any physical activity (such as sports, gym activity, or even manual work) for at least 2 or 3 weeks after surgery. This again ensures optimal conditions for healing, and minimises the risk of fluid retention.  Of course, this means that people with more physically demanding jobs will need to take more time off than those who work in an office, for example.

The results of the mini tummy tuck should be permanent, provided there is no rapid weight gain or pregnancy post-surgery.

Your aftercare package with Pall Mall will include a full programme of post-operative care. This will involve clinical review/checks of your wounds to make sure you are healing well.

Reverse Tummy Tuck

In addition to the full and mini tummy tuck, Pall Mall also offers a reverse abdominoplasty, also known as a reverse tummy tuck.

This is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed for patients who wish to remove excess and loose skin solely from the upper abdomen.

This type of tummy tuck differs from:

  • The traditional abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck – which addresses the issue of loose skin in both the upper and lower abdomen.
  • The mini tummy tuck – which focuses on the removal of loose skin exclusively from the lower abdomen.

When the skin below the belly button is nice and smooth, but the skin above the belly button is loose and hanging downwards, a reverse tummy tuck is typically the procedure we will recommend to rectify the problem.

However, if you are unsure about which tummy tuck surgery you need, you can book a free initial consultation with our highly experienced surgeons to see how this procedure can work for you.

Our friendly experts will decide with you which type of tummy tuck best suits your circumstance.

With this procedure, the upper abdominal skin is pulled upward without needing to make an incision around the belly button or pubic hairline.

What to expect during your reverse tummy tuck:

  1. You will be placed under a general anaesthetic, and your upper abdominal muscles will be sewn together if they have been stretched, creating an internal ‘corset’.
  2. The effect of this will be that your abdominal muscles will become far firmer and tight, creating a toned, athletic appearance, and losing that ‘soft’ look.
  3. Should there be any excess abdominal fat, our surgeons may perform liposuction to remove it to keep you looking toned.

After your surgery:

The post-surgery recovery is identical to the mini tummy tuck procedure above. Patients should plan a period of relaxation in the weeks following surgery, avoiding strenuous exercise and heavy lifting to let your body fully heal.

From weeks 10-12, you should feel back to your usual self. The reverse tummy tuck will give you permanent results (provided there is no rapid weight gain or pregnancy post-procedure), and once the healing process is complete, you will be looking toned, slim, and full of confidence.

After your surgery, we will provide you with a comprehensive tailored post-operative care programme. This includes regular clinical reviews to monitor your wounds and the overall healing process.

Extended Tummy Tuck

An extended tummy tuck surgery refers to a standard abdominoplasty, plus the targeting of the flank area, or love handles, that are between the waist and hips. Some extended tummy tuck procedures also target any excess skin on the lateral thigh.

For those wanting to slim the look of their stomach and flanks, an extended tummy tuck may be an ideal choice.

What happens during an extended tummy tuck procedure?

  1. During an extended tummy tuck, your surgeon will remove excess skin and fat from the stomach, repairing any muscles that may have been torn or have become loose.
  2. Separated muscles are sewn together.
  3. The incision is made above the pubic hairline, between your hip bones, wrapping around to the lower back, enabling your surgeon to remove skin and fat from the stomach and flank area.
  4. With the skin laid flat and pulled taut, the skin then appears flatter and smoother.
  5. The belly button is sutured in its original position unless you and your surgeon have decided to change the shape of it.

What is recovery like with an extended tummy tuck surgery?

As an extended tummy tuck also focuses on the flanks, in comparison to a traditional tummy tuck, you might find that the procedure itself takes longer and that the recovery time is also prolonged after the surgery.

In particular, you may find:

  • It may take around 6 months to 1 year for the full results of your extended tummy tuck to show.
  • The effects tend to be permanent unless you become pregnant or gain weight at a rapid rate.
  • Some scarring after an extended tummy tuck - however, this will usually lighten over time, so it is not something that you should worry about

To learn more about this procedure and whether it may be a good choice for you, don’t hesitate to contact our friendly team at your closest Pall Mall clinic.

Why might you choose a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck is a procedure that is recommended for those who have excess skin that sags around the stomach that cannot be removed through non-invasive means, such as exercise or other treatments. If you feel that your self-esteem is being negatively impacted by your sagging skin, a tummy tuck may be the perfect cosmetic surgery procedure for you.

A tummy tuck can help remove sagging skin and fat, making your stomach area stronger, toned, and firm. In comparison, an abdominal liposuction surgery may only remove fat and make your stomach appear flatter.

It is important to note that, as it is a surgical procedure, there is a chance of scarring, though our Pall Mall surgeons will ensure that any scarring is minimal. Scars will typically fade over time and may even fade entirely over several, months or years.

Loose skin after weight loss

If you have previously lost a lot of weight, then you may find yourself with sagging skin after your weight loss journey.

As the body gains weight, the skin also expands, and as you maintain this weight for an extended period of time, your skin is stretched to accommodate your size. It is also possible that the collagen and elastin fibres in your skin may get damaged during this time.

As a result, when you lose weight, your skin has lost its elasticity (or ability to retract), leaving you with saggy skin on your arms, body, and of course, stomach.

Book an appointment with Pall Mall today for a no-hassle consultation regarding our tummy tuck services.

Contributing factors to loose skin after weight loss

It is worth noting that specific factors may also determine how your skin bounces back into shape:

  • Your age – In general, the younger you are, the less likely you are to encounter extremely saggy skin
  • Your genetics – Your genetic profile may also play a role in how saggy your skin may become after weight loss

If you are planning to lose significant amounts of weight, it is recommended that you aim to do this gradually, instead of opting to lose weight rapidly. This allows your body to adjust to the changes efficiently.

However, a tummy tuck is still an option to consider if you are experiencing sagging and loose skin after weight loss.

Mandy, Mummy Makeover Patient

Loose skin and weight gain after pregnancy

It is normal to have some loose skin around the stomach after pregnancy as the skin stretches as your pregnancy bump grows. Some women find that their skin returns to normal quickly after delivery, but others have different experiences and may find that their loose skin stays for years.

Factors such as the following all account for how saggy your skin may become and how fast it may return to normal after pregnancy:

  • Age
  • Weight
  • Genetics

Exercise and nutrition during and after pregnancy can also affect how long it may take for your skin to look as it did pre-pregnancy.

Particularly, women who carry twins, triplets, or more may experience more sagging skin around their abdomen compared to those who only carry one baby. This is normal and not harmful at all.

However, many dislike the appearance of loose skin as it can lower their confidence or how their clothes fit them.

Can you prevent loose skin after a pregnancy?

In terms of prevention of loose skin after pregnancy, the likelihood of developing sagging skin can be minimised through:

  • Appropriate diet
  • Light exercises during the pregnancy, including those that strengthen the abdominal muscle like pilates and yoga. However, we recommend that you avoid strenuous or high-impact sports during pregnancy for safety.

Excessive weight gain in a short amount of time can lead to sagging skin after delivery, which is why it is suggested that pregnant women should aim to exercise regularly and eat healthily during their pregnancy to prevent this - not to mention, healthy habits also have a positive impact on the baby.

You may find that with loose skin, especially extremely sagging skin, it will never be able to regain its pre-pregnancy appearance. But, with medical treatment, you can certainly improve the appearance of loose skin.

If you are unable to return your skin to normal after pregnancy, are comfortable with removing it surgically, and are not planning on trying for any more pregnancies, a tummy tuck is a great option.

Changes in your body type

Ageing is inevitable, and with ageing also comes changes to our body types and skin elasticity. As you age, your skin loses elastin and collagen - two important proteins that assist with skin firmness and elasticity. Production of these proteins can also decline due to external factors like:

  • Extended UV exposure
  • Environmental pollutants, like smoke
  • Lifestyle factors, like excess alcohol consumption or poor nutrition

Most people commonly begin to experience skin laxity between 35 and 40 years old, and although it is nothing to worry about since it is part of the natural ageing process, many people are still concerned about it - especially with how it can make them look and feel.

It is a good idea to take care of your skin when you are younger so that you are able to reap the benefits as you get older. Investing in beauty products packed with beneficial ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and collagen, as well as regular exercise and a healthy diet, are all excellent ways to help you age gracefully.

As you grow older, your body will no doubt undergo a number of changes – from adolescence to adulthood, your body is constantly changing.

Loose skin can be a result of these changes, and if you are struggling with getting rid of sagging skin around your abdomen, a tummy tuck with Pall Mall is the ideal solution for tightening your abdomen and maintaining a youthful and bright appearance.

Alternatives to Tummy Tucks

A tummy tuck is an effective way to deal with, and permanently get rid of, excess fat and abdominal skin, whilst tightening damaged and weakened core muscles. However, not everyone is prepared to deal with the scarring, downtime, and recovery process that comes with cosmetic surgery.

It is therefore advised that, before you commit to surgery, you consider some alternatives so that you have a clear idea of all the options available to you.

Liposuction

Liposuction, known colloquially as ‘lipo’, is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures and is a highly effective method of removing excess fat, without the stress of life-changing surgery and long-term recovery.

Liposuction is a far less intrusive cosmetic treatment than the traditional tummy tuck and provides a more focused alternative to traditional surgery. Some areas of the body are more prone to storing these fatty deposits, and liposuction can target these areas directly without invading other areas of the body.

A few examples of the areas that liposuction can target include the:

  • Upper and/or lower abdomen
  • Love handles
  • Outer or inner thighs
  • Legs
  • Arms
  • Calves
  • Ankles
  • Hips
  • Knees
  • Jawline
  • Male chests
  • Backs

Liposuction is one of the most popular procedures for refining and re-shaping the body and can help you realise a body you are happy with, without dramatically altering your lifestyle or having a long recovery.

What can you expect with a liposuction procedure?

  1. During liposuction, you will be given a general aesthetic for sedation so that you will not be in any pain or discomfort.
  2. Our specialist plastic surgeons use a special device known as a cannula to remove the unwanted fat from problem areas.
  3. Small incisions are created through which the cannula is inserted.
  4. The scarring is tiny and much less extensive compared to a typical abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) procedure.

Patients should be aware that liposuction is only appropriate for patients who have excess abdominal fat but an otherwise good skin elasticity.

Moreover, whilst liposuction surgery delivers incredible physical improvements, it is not a weight-loss technique or a solution for obesity – our surgery merely complements this.

Our experts in body contouring skilfully sculpt, eliminate, and remove your unwanted fat deposits in a single treatment. We operate at the highest efficiency, and you can expect surgery time to be an approximate 3 hours.

Multiple areas can be treated in one session, and our expert body surgeons can talk you through the options available during a free-of-charge consultation.

Vaser Liposuction

Standing for ‘Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance’, Vaser liposuction offers a modern, less invasive option for fat removal compared to traditional liposuction. It applies ultrasound wavelengths to truly annihilate those stubborn fat deposits that won’t go away through exercise or diet.

Vaser is a liposuction technique that uses cutting-edge and scientifically proven ultrasound waves to break up, liquefy, and ultimately kill fat cells – making them easier to extract, and making it easier for you to lose weight and look the best you can be.

What is recovery like?

In particular, with a vaser liposuction, you may find:

  • Less swelling
  • Less pain during recovery
  • A shorter recovery period

We can treat multiple areas during our session – and we will talk to you through the options available, free of charge.

Contact us today to find out more about liposuction at our specialist-built private hospital in Newton-le-Willows.

Frequently Asked Questions.

Our expert team is always hand to help, advise and arrange appointments with our specialist consultants.

What happens during a tummy tuck surgery consultation?

A tummy tuck can be a huge change in a person’s life and our surgeons are always keen to explain fully the risks and benefits of this surgery. Thus the surgeon will hold a discussion with you during your consultation after examining your abdominal area.

The discussion will be around what type of tummy tuck would be recommended; either a mini or full abdominoplasty. This will depend on your levels of excess fat. This consultation will be around 20-45 minutes.

What happens on the day of tummy tuck surgery?

Our private hospital at Newton-le-Willows will welcome you on the day of your surgery with a free carpark, a spacious and clean bedroom with an en-suite bathroom as well as a friendly smile from our staff. Your every comfort will be met!

Once you’ve settled in, your surgeon will arrive to carry out some quick checks to make sure you’re in good health and have a consent form for you to sign. This is your last chance to ask some questions so make sure you get anything of your mind!

You will be taken to the theatre and sedated under a local or general anaesthetic before the Tummy Tuck is performed. This will take two hours and afterwards you will be taken back to your room where you will stay for the night.

What happens during tummy tuck surgery pre-op?

Whatever your reasons for having a tummy tuck, Pall Mall is here to help you along the way. You are invited to a pre-surgery assessment, where a series of tests will be taken to sign off on your health and medical suitability for your operation. This will involve a check for MRSA and you may be required to do urine or blood tests.

With your consent, we’d also like to get some photos of your stomach for our medical records before the surgery.

Finally, it’s vital you feel heard and can arrive on the day of surgery without any worries. Therefore, we welcome you to ask us anything you want that nurse will be more than happy to answer, no matter how small or unimportant you think it may be.

What happens during tummy tuck surgery post-op?

You will be able to leave the hospital the next day however you are required to return three times in the next two months. At week one, week two and finally in week six. The surgeon will want to make sure you are reacting well to the operation as well as take some pictures of your abdomen for our records and so you can see the transformation.

What is the aftercare for tummy tuck surgery?

Our industry leading aftercare programme is availbale to you as well, so if you want to raise concerns or get some information you’ll have direct contact 24/7 with our nurses and our team are happy to arrange further clinic meetings to assess the progress of the tummy tuck.

What is abdominoplasty surgery?

An abdominoplasty, or full tummy tuck, is ideal for those who have loose skin and fat (an “overhang”) and can restore the contours of the abdomen.

It is a procedure where the skin and fat below the umbilicus (belly button) is removed using a scar that runs from hip to hip hidden inside the silhouette of the underwear. The upper abdomen is then re-draped and the umbilicus re-positioned. Abdominal muscle weakness can accentuate a bulge, so the muscles of the abdomen are usually tightened up to correct this. It requires a general anaesthetic, takes around 2-3 hours and usually involves a stay in hospital for 1 night after the surgery.

What is a mini abdominoplasty?

mini abdominoplasty, also known as the mini tummy tuck, is ideal for those who have a little loose skin and fat below the umbilicus as is typically seen in slimmer ladies after having children.

It is a similar procedure to the full abdominoplasty to remove skin and fat but the technique uses a scar just above the pubic area, hidden inside the silhouette of the underwear. By contrast to a standard abdominoplasty, the umbilicus (belly button) is not re-positioned, the scar is often shorter and drains are also not typically used. It requires a general anaesthetic, takes around 1-2 hours and can be performed as a day case.

The procedures are not a method of weight loss, but can give the confidence to kick-start a general lifestyle change that comprises of changes in diet and increased exercise.

Will there be scarring after my tummy tuck surgery?

You can expect scarring from this procedure. It is common to have a scar running across the full width of your lower tummy area and around the belly button. This is normally aligned to your underwear line so that it can be concealed with your day to day clothing. The appearance of the scar can take up to 12 months to improve but will not disappear completely. Your surgeon can explain this fully within your consultation.

When can I exercise after tummy tuck surgery?

You should avoid any strenuous physical activity, exertion through work or sport and gym exercise during the first 4 – 6 weeks following surgery. This prevents any increased fluid accumulation and enables your body to focus upon healing faster for a full recovery.

When can I drive after tummy tuck surgery?

You can drive again when you feel comfortable and physically able to control the car (such as being able to perform an emergency stop). This is commonly around 2 – 3 weeks following tummy tuck surgery but is highly dependant on how fast you are recovering and have suitable body strength & control to be able to safely drive and meet the terms of your driving license; you should always inform your insurance company.

When can I return to work after tummy tuck surgery?

This would depend on the nature of your job and how you are progressing with your recovery. It is common to require 2-3 weeks off work or as tolerated (everybody is different). If you are an office worker, doing only light administrative tasks, you will be physically able to return quicker than a person who has a more physical job. If you need to move/lift heavy items or have a very hands on job, it would be ideal to arrange a couple of weeks of lighter tasks upon your return too, as exertion can cause side-effects and reduce your ongoing recovery.

What can I expect after tummy tuck surgery?

After you have been discharged from our hospital after having a Tummy Tuck procedure, you would leave with pain relief, dressings and a support/pressure garment (corset) on your tummy, or tummy control pants. You will not be able to drive therefore someone would need to drive you home. It is recommended that you have someone stay with you for the following 24 hours after leaving hospital. Your support garment should be worn for 6 weeks for your comfort and to help with healing.

Your aftercare package with Pall Mall Cosmetics will include a full programme of post-operative care. This will involve clinical review/checks of your wounds to make sure you are healing well.

How long does a tummy tuck surgery take?

A Tummy Tuck is around a 2-3 hour operation.

Can you combine a tummy tuck with other surgeries?

We often see patients combine a tummy tuck with breast surgery and liposuction. This is our ‘mummy makeover’ package where we see mothers coming for surgery post childbirth to regain their confidence and reverse the changes to their body post pregnancy.

What to expect following your tummy tuck surgery...

Following your surgery, it is quite normal to feel some minor to moderate pain and sitting in an upright position with pillows below your knees will reduce any pressure or stretch on your stomach. You will have been discharged with medications to take to help control your pain, follow the instructions given to you on your discharge.

If you have had general anaesthesia or sedation, this can temporarily affect your coordination and reasoning skills. It is strongly advised that you must not drive, drink alcohol, operate machinery or sign legal documents for 48 hours afterwards.

It is important you do not over stretch or lift during your recovery. Ask for assistance with dressing and allow the person taking you home to carry your bags. Be cautious around young children and animals when you return home and ensure they do not come into contact with your stomach whilst you are recovering. The first few days following surgery, your abdominoplasty post-op care should focus on getting plenty of rest, relaxing, listening to your body, and pampering yourself. For the first 24 to 48 hours, you should also arrange for help from a family member or friend.

Following abdominoplasty, you will often have drains inserted to your stomach to help remove excess fluid and reduce swelling. Your nurse will often remove these before your discharge however the surgeon may at times request you go home with them in, and you will return after a few days for removal. Removal of drains should cause minimal pain as you will find the area will remain fairly numb at the start of your recovery.

You might feel tired or drowsy for the first few hours - this is related to the anaesthetic and medication given for the surgery.

You will have some pain and discomfort for the first few days - taking regular painkillers will help. Maximum discomfort will occur on the first few days. There will be some swelling and bruising around your stomach, the majority of this will subside in 6-8 weeks.

You may feel tired for several weeks or months.

What activity can I do post tummy tuck surgery?

Limit your activities for the first week to avoid unnecessary bleeding. However, do not remain immobile due to the risk of deep vein thrombosis- keep stockings on until you have returned to your normal mobility.

For the first week ensure you walk bent over so as to not fully straighten your stomach. You should also sleep with pillows under your knees and sit upright at around 45-degree angle. This will avoid any tension on the wound during the start of the healing process- you will gradually be able to straighten up as normal.

Do not engage in any strenuous activity during the first few weeks after your surgery. Be sure to avoid vigorous or excessive stretching or lifting for 4-6 weeks

How soon can I drive after my tummy tuck surgery?

You should not drive yourself home or drive for a minimum of 2 weeks following your surgery. You must be able to do an emergency stop safely without causing discomfort and be able to turn adequately to see blind spots.

If you are in doubt about driving, contact your motor insurer so that you are aware of their recommendations, and always follow your surgeon's advice.

How long after my tummy tuck surgery will my dressings be removed?

Leave dressings intact until they are removed in the clinic. You will usually have dissolvable sutures in place- these will dissolve 1-2 weeks following surgery. It is common to have some blood strike through onto the dressings but if it appears fully soaked or leaking through, please contact your clinic for an early dressing change.

▪ Avoid getting the wound wet until all the dressings are removed. After they have been removed only shower- avoid soaking your wound in the bath for 6-8 weeks post operatively

What is the aftercare like following a tummy tuck surgery?

  • Wear you binder at all times for 6 weeks following surgery- this will help with swelling and aid recovery resulting in a better finished result.
  • You will usually go home with 2 drains in your abdomen- this will help drain any excess fluids from the area. Ensure you know how to manage the drains at home. You will be given an appointment for drain removal- this is normally 3-7 days post op.
  • Wear loose and comfortable clothing that will not rub on your incision.
  • Follow your surgeon's advice on how long you should take off of work. This should be a minimum of 1-2 weeks depending on your job.
  • If you notice any undue swelling, pain, bleeding, fever, or discharge from your wounds please contact your clinic.
  • Do not apply anything on to your scars unless advised by your own surgeon.
Can I smoke before my tummy tuck surgery?

Avoid smoking and using any nicotine products during your recovery as this will affect your body's ability to recover and will delay wound healing.

Do I have to stop taking my medicine before my tummy tuck operation?

Please inform staff if you take any other medications to minimise the risk of contraindications.

Complete the full course of antibiotics if prescribed.

Take your painkillers as prescribed - try to take regularly for the first few days and avoid any aspirin containing drugs as they will thin the blood and increase the bleeding risk. Your normal bowel action may be disrupted following surgery - you may take a mild over the counter laxative if required.

What should I eat after my tummy tuck surgery?

Fluids are critical following surgery. Stick with a light nutritious diet for the first 24- 48 hours. Following your surgery it is important to eat foods high in protein and full of vitamins and minerals to help aid the healing process.

What do I do if I have any concerns after my tummy tuck surgery?

We have a dedicated nurse on call team, you should contact them immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • A high fever, (over 38c).
  • Severe nausea and vomiting.
  • Continued dizziness or incoherent behaviour, such as hallucinations.
  • Any pain that cannot be controlled by your pain medication.
  • Excessive bleeding leading to your dressings leaking.
What type of anaesthetic is used during tummy tuck surgery?

For this surgery you will be placed under general anaesthetic and monitored closely throughout the whole surgery. This is a controlled state of unconsciousness to ensure you don’t feel pain or move while surgery is being carried out.

How long after a tummy tuck will I start to see results?

After surgery, you'll have your newly toned stomach which will be swollen and bruised for the first 6 weeks. You will have to wear a compression garment to aid recovery. Stay positive, the results of this procedure will be worth the wait.
