What is a 360 tummy tuck (belt lipectomy)?

A 360 tummy tuck, also known as a belt lipectomy or circumferential abdominoplasty, is a more advanced form of tummy tuck surgery designed to tuck and tighten your entire torso. While a standard tummy tuck focuses on the front of the abdomen only, a 360 tummy tuck addresses excess skin and fat around the entire waistline — including the abdomen, hips, waist, and lower back.

If you have lost a significant amount of weight, are post-pregnancy, or if you have a lot of loose skin, then the 360 tummy tuck could be the right procedure for you. Read on to learn more about the 360 tummy tuck, and if you have any questions along the way, please contact our expert team. We’re here for you!

What happens during a 360 tummy tuck procedure?

Here’s the important bit: you’ll learn what your journey involves from first enquiry to post-surgery. Let’s start at the beginning:

Book your free consultation: Pre-surgery, you will attend a free, no-obligation consultation at one of our four CQC registered clinics.

Attend your pre-op assessment: Next, you will be invited to a pre-operative assessment where we will take bloods and a urine sample to make sure you and nice and healthy for the surgery.

Have your surgery: During your 360 tummy tuck, your surgeon will make a large line incision across the bottom of your torso (specifically your abdomen, back, and flanks).

Here is what your 360 tummy tuck procedure involves, step by step:

Anaesthetic

Once you’ve checked into our CQC registered hospital in Newton-le-Willows, you’ll be taken into our theatre room. You will meet our expert anaesthetists who will ensure you’re asleep and comfortable during your procedure. Your surgeon will also be present; he will be busy marking lines around the bottom of your torso, in preparation to make his incisions.

Circumferential incision

Next, your circumferential incision is made. This means that the incision will be made all the way around your torso. Using this method means that your surgeon can tighten your loose skin from every angle - one of the reasons why you might choose a 360 tummy tuck vs a standard tummy tuck.

Removal of excess skin & fat

At this stage, your surgeon will remove the loose skin and fat from your abdomen, back, and sides before pulling the remaining skin tight. Once you’re fully recovered in 3-6 months time, you will see a massive improvement in this region and your abdomen will appear smooth and snatched.

Belt lipectomy with butterfly lift explained

When your surgeon begins to work on your back’s loose skin and fat, he will use a technique called the `butterfly lift`. The incision pattern resembles a butterfly, and is used to tighten and lift the back and buttocks.

Muscle repair & tightening

If you have a condition called diastasis recti (where your abs have seperated due to weight loss or pregnancy), your surgeon can repair and tighten them here. This step doesn’t happen for everyone, so it’s important to mention it to your surgeon during your free consultation.

Belly button re-positioning

Now that your torso is flat, smooth, and neatly tucked - it’s time to return your belly button to its natural positioning.

Closing the incisions

Once the procedure has been completed, the incisions are closed using sutures and, if necessary, drainage tubes are attached. A compression garment is also fitted to help with swelling and to aid results.

After surgery

The surgery itself takes roughly 4-6 hours. Post-op, you’ll be invited to spend 1-3 nights in our CQC registered hospital in Newton-le-Willows.

360 tummy tuck scars: what to expect

360 tummy tuck scars look like a belt - which is why the procedure is also called a belt lipectomy! This scar pattern is created by making a large incision across the lower abdomen, back, and flanks (sides).

Your scars will be easy to hide beneath underwear or swimwear, but if scarring is bothersome to you, then discuss it with your surgeon at your free consultation. He will be fully equipped to answer any questions you may have. You can also ask him for 360 tummy tuck before and afters.

Recovery After a 360 Tummy Tuck

Recovery after a 360 tummy tuck takes a little longer than a standard tummy tuck because several areas of the body are targeted, rather than one. Here is what recovery looks like:

  • Immediately pre-op - 1-3 nights
  • Initial recovery - 2-3 weeks
  • Return to normal activities - 6-8 weeks
  • Final results - 3-6 months

If you have any questions about the recovery timeline after a tummy tuck or contact us here.

Who is suitable for a 360 tummy tuck?

At Pall Mall Medical, we usually say that patients who are NOT candidates for a standard tummy tuck will be able to have a 360 tummy tuck or a Fleur-de-Lis. The 360 tummy tuck is commonly recommended for patients who:
Have loose skin all around their midsection - including their abdomen, back, and sides
Have lost a significant amount of weight either naturally or via bariatric surgery
Are close to their goal weight and would like to tuck their loose skin
Want contouring all around their body rather than just a flatter stomach
Have diastasis recti following drastic weight loss or pregnancy
Have excess skin and/or fat following pregnancy
The 360 tummy tuck is NOT suitable for patients who: Have little loose skin and excess fat. Are planning on loosing a lot of weight in the near future. Only seeking a flat tummy

360 tummy tuck vs Fleur-de-Lis tummy tuck: which is right for me?

The 360 tummy tuck and Fleur-de-Lis tummy tuck are both suitable for patients who have lots of loose skin as a result of losing a considerable amount of weight:

  • Naturally through diet and exercise
  • After weight loss surgery (bariatric surgery)
  • After pregnancy

The main difference is that:

The Fleur-de-Lis tummy tuck takes loose skin and fat horizontally and vertically, which results in a smooth, tight abdomen. The 360 tummy tuck takes loose skin and fat from the entire circumference of the abdomen, hips, and flanks (sides), which results in a smooth, tight abdomen along with a snatched waist and lifted buttocks and back.

It is worth noting that the 360 scars are less visible than the Fleur-de-Lis scars. The 360 tummy tuck scars include a low belt-like scar across the bikini line. The Fleur-de-Lis tummy tuck scars include a flower-like scar across the lower and central abdomen

Both procedures are ideal for patients who are not suitable for a standard tummy tuck because they have too much loose skin. However, it all depends on where you have loose skin and the type of results you want to achieve.

Recovery After a 360 Tummy Tuck

The results of a 360 tummy tuck involves improving the torso from every angle - including the abdomen, hips, and back - not just the front like a standard tummy tuck.

After getting a 360 tummy tuck, you can expect:

  • A flat, toned abdomen
  • A cinched, more contoured waist
  • A smooth and lifted lower back

As with all tummy tuck procedures, you can expect to feel more comfortable, you’ll have less rubbing and chafing, and your clothes should fit better.

What is the cost of a 360 tummy tuck in the UK?
