A HycoSy (hysterosalpingo-contrast sonography) is a fertility scan that checks whether your fallopian tubes are open, while allowing your specialist to look at your womb.
During the scan, a small amount of contrast dye is gently passed through your cervix into your womb. Using an ultrasound scan, your consultant can watch the contrast as it moves through your fallopian tubes to see whether they appear open.

A HyCoSy is usually done in the first half of your cycle, after your period has finished and before you ovulate, typically between days 5 and 12. Our team will help you find the right date when you book. If your cycle is irregular, just let us know and we’ll work around it.
A HyCoSy scan can cause some discomfort, cramping or a period-like sensation, although the experience varies from person to person. Some women find it relatively comfortable, while others experience more noticeable cramping. Your consultant will explain what to expect and help you feel as comfortable as possible throughout the procedure.
A HyCoSy is a very safe procedure, and it doesn’t use radiation or iodine-based dye. The most common side effects are temporary cramping and spotting. There’s a small risk of infection, which is why your consultant may recommend a swab beforehand. Your consultant will talk you through anything specific to you before the test begins.
Your consultant will explain your results straight after the scan and talk you through your options. Depending on what they find, that may include further investigations or support from our fertility clinic. Whatever your results show, you’ll leave knowing where you stand and what your next step could be.
