The Meningitis B virus is a major cause of bacterial infection and death in children in the UK (there are approx. 1,200 meningitis B cases each year in the UK - it is fatal in one in 10 cases) and is highly infectious, as the disease can cause meningitis and blood poisoning. About one in four of those who survive illness with Meningitis B, are left with long-term health problems, such as amputation, deafness, epilepsy and learning difficulties.
The Meningitis B vaccination (Bexsero) is available privately through Pall Mall Medical for all children from two months to 11 years. It is currently only available on the NHS for those under 2 months of age since 2016.
