Diagnostic Biopsy

A biopsy is a sample of a small amount of tissue or cells that will be examined in a laboratory.
It is used to obtain bits of tissue to be checked in the laboratory for signs of cancer or other diseases. The biopsy sample is stained and examined under a microscope in the lab. It may also be used to identify possible cancer or causes of inflammation and infection.

The area to be biopsied is thoroughly cleaned and numbed with a local anaesthetic. A sterile scalpel is used to cut away a small piece of tissue, and then the wound is stitched (sutured) closed.

Your doctor may recommend a shave biopsy if you have:

• A suspicious mole or lesion
• A skin growth that has changed in size, shape, or color
• A rash or unexplained skin condition
• Raised bumps, warts, or other growths requiring diagnosis

• Cleansing & Numbing – The area is cleaned, and a local anesthetic is applied so you won’t feel pain.
• Shaving the Sample – Using a small blade, your provider gently shaves a thin layer of skin from the surface.
• Stopping Bleeding – A chemical solution, heat or pressure may be used to control any minor bleeding.
• Dressing the Area – A small bandage is applied, and aftercare instructions are provided.

The entire procedure typically takes just a few minutes.
