The different types of breast Uplift available at Pall Mall Choose the right mastopexy for you!

There are different types of breast uplift surgeries to be aware of so that you are able to understand which one would be most suitable for you. Knowing how they differ from each other can help you identify the type of breast uplift procedure that you would prefer to proceed with.

Factors such as breast size, amount of loose skin, and your desired result can all affect which type of mastopexy the team at Pall Mall might recommend for you.

Crescent Breast Lift

A crescent breast lift is recommended for breasts with only minor sagging, and is usually paired with a breast augmentation procedure as well. A crescent-shaped incision is made by a cosmetic surgeon along the top half of the areola, removing the skin and inserting the implants. As a result, breast firmness is improved while also adding volume and revitalising the appearance of the nipple.

Peri-Areolar Breast Lift

Also known informally as a doughnut breast lift, a peri-areolar breast lift is designed for patients with minimal sagging, but significant enough that a crescent breast lift method would be ineffective. If you are looking for a medium lift, then a peri-areolar breast lift is the ideal breast uplift operation for you. In terms of scars, the incision of a peri-areolar breast lift traces the entire areola, leaving a circular-shaped scar that is almost invisible to the naked eye.

Vertical Breast Lift

Meanwhile, if you have large amounts of loose skin around your breasts and your nipples droop at least 5 centimetres, a vertical breast lift is the best option for you. When it comes to breast lifts, a vertical breast lift scar will certainly be more noticeable compared to a crescent breast lift, however, the scar will usually be hidden by your bra.

Similar to the peri-areolar breast lift, a circular incision is made around the areolar, and then vertically downwards towards the breast crease, creating a lollipop-shaped incision.

Anchor Breast Lift

An anchor breast lift leaves the most noticeable scar out of the mentioned breast lifts, but it is also the most effective choice for those with severe sagging and significant amounts of excess skin. True to its namesake, this surgical procedure makes an upside-down anchor-shaped incision, removing excess skin, repositioning the tissue, and raising the areolae. A breast implant removal or breast reduction procedure can also be done alongside this type of breast lift.

What can you expect from a breast uplift surgery at Pall Mall?

At every stage of the process, from consultation all the way through to the aftercare, you can count on the team at Pall Mall to be with you every step of the way.

Breast Uplift Journey

After your free consultation with one of our highly skilled surgeons at one of our clinics in Leeds, Liverpool or central Manchester - Once you have made the decision to proceed with the surgery and have full confidence in your chosen surgeon, you can proceed to book a date for your procedure. However, it is important to note that we have a mandatory "cooling off period" of at least two weeks. This period allows you ample time to reflect on your decision and ensure that you are completely certain about your choice for surgery. Once the cooling off period has concluded, you are welcome to book your surgery date and take the next steps towards achieving your desired outcome.

The operation itself takes roughly around two to three hours, possibly more if other procedures are combined.

You’ll be in the best of care with our team of dedicated nurses and your own private, ensuite room at our own private hospital in Newton-le-Willows.

Consultation

Your consultation with our surgeon will take between 20-45 minutes and will be an easy and open conversation about the surgery and how the breast will be lifted higher, as well as discussing potential complications such as swelling, numbness or cosmetic issues.

Pre-Operation

We will invite you to attend a pre-operative assessment. Your nurse will invite you to take part in a series of medical checks to ensure you are healthy and fit enough for the surgery.

All patients will be tested for MRSA and there may also be some blood and urine tests administered, however, there’s no need to worry, we just want to ensure you are getting the best possible service from Pall Mall.

The most important part of this breast uplift assessment is taking photos of your breasts so that we have medical records that show how they looked prior to the surgery.

This way, we will be able to successfully show you your transformation as well as keep track for medical purposes. The nurse is there to help you during the appointment so ask questions so that you can feel confident about your procedure.

Surgery

Our hospital in Newton-le-Willows is built for your comfort so that once you arrive you feel calm and relaxed about the operation. The surgery itself takes around two to three hours, where you will be sedated with a general anaesthetic.

Your surgeon will remove excess skin from your breasts and reshape the breast tissue. They will also reposition your nipple, lifting it higher.

Following your procedure dressings will be applied to the incisions. There may be a small drainage tube placed temporarily in your breasts to drain any fluid or blood following surgery.

The drains will be removed before you are discharged from the hospital. You will ware your post-op bra to help support your breasts post procedure.

You will need to rest until any effects of the general anaesthetic have worn off. You may need pain relief medication.

Post-Surgery

After the surgery, patients tend to be able to go home on the same day, but in some cases may need to stay over night. Post surgery your breasts may appear swollen or discoloured, however, over time the incision lines will fade and the results will gradually improve over the next six months.

Don’t worry though, our Patient Experience team here will keep in touch and invite you to come into the clinic multiple times over the next six weeks to ensure everything is progressing as expected.

Aftercare

We have an industry leading aftercare program. Consequently, you are free to come in after your procedure as often as you like or you can contact our amazing nurses on a 24/7 call line. You will be advised to reframe any strenuous exercise in the weeks following surgery and it is imperative you follow your surgeon’s recovery plan to allow you to achieve the expected results by 6-9 months.

Our Breast Uplift procedure details in 6 simple steps:

Here is what your breast uplift procedure will typically look like:

Step 1 - General Anaesthetic

You will be put under general anaesthetic - you must not eat anything for 6 hours before the procedure, and you must not drink anything between 2 and 4 hours before

Step 2 - Incision Placements

The incision placement varies depending on the type of breast lift your surgeon will be performing, however you can expect an incision to be made around your areola, potentially downwards towards your breast crease and possibly horizontally along the breast fold

Step 3 - Excess Skin

Excess skin is removed and breast tissue is reshaped using stitches; your nipple will also be repositioned to a higher position and the size of your areola may also be reduced using stitches as well

Step 4 - Combination Surgery

If you have also decided on a breast enlargement, breast implants will be inserted to improve breast fullness; this is typically placed under your breast tissue or behind your chest muscle

Step 5 - Surgical Support Bra

Incisions are then closed with stitches, surgical tape, or skin adhesives; your breasts may also be covered in gauze and wrapped in a supportive dressing or surgical support bra

Step 6 - Drains

Thin tubes may be placed at the incision sites to drain excess fluid - this is removed when the draining has stopped

Recovery and aftercare: Everything you need to know

Following a mastopexy, you might be able to go home on the same day or spend the night in our private hospital based in Newton-le-Willows in your own private room with an ensuite and netflix access.

You will need to rest until the anaesthetic has worn off. Keep in mind that you will need to have someone else drive you home - having someone stay at home with you for the first 24 hours after the operation is recommended.

Before you leave, our nursing team will give you sound advice about your recovery and aftercare.

Pall Mall’s aftercare program is one of the best in the industry, so you can rest assured that you are in capable hands when it comes to your recovery.

However, you also have your own responsibility regarding your recovery and aftercare during check-ups, so it is extremely important that you follow your recovery plan set by your surgeon and nurse.

This is to ensure that your desired results are achieved in the months following your operation.

Post Op Advice

You can rely on Pall Mall to deliver high quality care and amazing results, no matter the cosmetic procedure!

When can you see results?

The ultimate result of your breast lift surgery may not be noticeable until 3-6 months after your procedure, but you will certainly notice a change in the appearance of your breasts immediately.

Scars will usually fade 12 to 18 months post-op, so don’t be discouraged by your incision scars - these can be hidden with bras. We also offer free scarring cream to patients which will help reduce the visibility of scars.

Be mindful of the fact that even after your operation, your breasts may naturally sag again. As a result, it’s a good idea to maintain a healthy and stable weight to prevent the skin around your breasts from stretching!

Pain management

Pain medication will be advised in the days following your procedure - make sure that you take the recommended dosage and type of pain relief as recommended by your nursing team and surgeon. This will usually be over-the-counter (OTC) painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol that you can simply purchase at your local pharmacy.

You can expect to feel pain and soreness around the incisions, as well as a lack of nipple sensation and numbness in your areola and breast skin for a few weeks.

Wound care

Avoid bending, straining, and sleeping on your sides or front after your operation. For the first few weeks post-op. We recommend wearing a Post Op bra up to 6 weeks after your surgery.

Your Bra provides gentle compression to your wounds as your new breasts settle.

Any strenuous activity such as exercise, heavy lifting, and sexual activity should be avoided for at least 2 weeks after the procedure. It is recommended to gradually build up your activity. Make sure to protect your breasts from sun exposure as well.

When patients can expect to return to their normal activities

Ask your nursing team for an estimated timeframe for when it is appropriate for you to resume any normal activity - as they will know better than anyone else!

Generally, you can expect to return to performing mundane tasks 6 weeks post-op, but this can vary from individual to individual.

Receive peace of mind when you choose Pall Mall for your breast uplift operation with our 24/7 post-surgery support, including unlimited post-op check-up appointments.

Aftercare

Our aftercare programme puts you at the centre and our dedicated patient experience team are committed to helping you at every stage of your recovery. We’ll be in contact with a 24/7 support line to connect you to our industry-leading nurses and make sure you are completely happy with your surgery. We encourage you to visit us as much as you need to post-op, we also have a clinical team on hand to answer any questions.

Combination of other cosmetic breast surgeries

As previously mentioned, other cosmetic procedures such as breast augmentation and breast reduction can also accompany a breast uplift surgery if the patient wishes.

Some women also want to increase their breast size alongside removing unneeded skin, so inserting breast implants during the procedure can be done.

Others might want to reduce the size of their breasts, and so excess breast tissue, fat, more skin, and existing breast implants may be removed to decrease the size of each breast. This can all be discussed during your free, no obligation with one of our surgeons who will educate you on the best route to achieving your desired look.

If you are interested in any of the above benefits, get in touch with Pall Mall today by giving us a call on 03300 27 26 47.

How do our patients benefit from a breast uplift?

For many women, a breast uplift or mastopexy has a number of benefits that they can reap. It’s considered a popular cosmetic procedure in the UK. In fact, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons’ annual audit for 2022 revealed that cosmetic procedures skyrocketed up 102% from the previous year.

Although this is to be expected as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the figures are still higher than they were pre-pandemic. As you can see, the demand for plastic surgery is on the rise - with breast-related procedures leading the way.

So, what are the advantages of mastopexies?

Improved breast shape

As its name suggests, a breast uplift lifts and reshapes the breast, removing sagging and loose skin, tightening this area for a more youthful and perkier breast appearance.

For women whose breasts may have become saggier or whose areolas have become enlarged over time, a breast uplift is the ideal way to reshape their breasts to correct this.

Increased self-confidence

It is normal for women to start losing self-esteem or confidence if their breasts have started sagging. While it is also normal for breasts to sag over time as a result of weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and the natural ageing process, if it is taking a toll on your self-confidence, then opting for breast uplift surgery is an excellent solution.

Not only can this enhance the appearance of your breasts, but it also increases your own confidence.

Improved body image

By revitalising the look of the breasts, this can help improve patients’ body image, allowing them to feel more comfortable wearing things like bikinis, V-shaped tops, strapless tops, and more. If the loose skin around your breasts were stopping you from heading to the beach or wearing a dress that you like, then a breast uplift procedure at Pall Mall can help you look and feel gorgeous, empowering you with the confidence to do all of these things.

Don’t forget that we also specialise in other cosmetic procedures like a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty that can further improve your body image.

The price can vary depending on whether you choose to also include a breast augmentation or breast reduction surgery on top of the breast uplift.

How long does breast uplift surgery take?

A breast uplift procedure will typically take around 2 to 3 hours, but potentially more if there are complications and/or extra procedures to be performed.

You can expect to spend approximately 5 hours at our private hospital, which takes into account your final pre-op consultation, administration of anaesthesia, the operation itself, and the time it takes for the anaesthesia to wear off.

In some cases, you might be required to stay overnight - in which meals are provided and a stay in your own private, ensuite room at our hospital - are already included in your surgery price.

How long is the recovery period for a breast uplift operation?

The healing process can differ between patients, but most patients will find themselves being able to return to normal activity 6 weeks post-op. The final shape of your breasts will usually be seen in around 6 to 12 weeks after the procedure, and scarring tends to fade 12 to 18 months post-op as well.

What risks are involved with a breast lift?

Like with any form of surgery, there are some risks associated with breast uplift surgery that patients should be aware of.

Temporary side-effects of breast lifts include:

  • Scars - will usually fade over time
  • Bruising, swelling and soreness in the breasts - settles within a few weeks
  • Changes in nipple sensation - can become more or less sensitive

What does breast uplift surgery involve?

A breast uplift, also known as a mastopexy, operation involves removing excess skin from beneath the breast and tightening the skin and breast tissue. The surgeon will make a small incision around the areola, vertically down to below the breast and finally horizontally along the crease – this is often referred to as an “anchor scar” and fades significantly with time. The nipple may be re-positioned, typically lifted higher, to suit the new shape of the breast.

The procedure will require under general anaesthesia and is expected to take between 1-2 hours, depending on the extent of surgery required. An overnight stay at our private hospital may be required, although most procedures are performed as a day case. The time in theatre may be longer in duration if combined with another procedure such as breast augmentation with insertion of implants or with a breast reduction, to also reduce the volume and re-shape the breast tissue.
What should I expect after breast uplift surgery?

Breast Uplift is a commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedure at Pall Mall Medical and across the world. With all procedures, there are risks involved. Your surgeon will discuss any risks with you in great detail.

Pall Mall Medical have a dedicated approach to after-care. Your care continues as long as you need us! We have our own team of nurses, who will see you regularly at post-op, follow up appointments. Our surgeons will also review your progress to ensure you are fully happy with the outcome of your surgery.

If you do require further surgery, this is provided to you providing you and your surgeon both agree it is necessary.

When is it common to have a breast uplift?

A breast uplift procedure is a common surgery performed to create a “fuller” and more youthful appearance of a woman’s breasts. Women may opt for a breast mastopexy procedure privately if they have:

  • Lost fullness and shape in their breasts after:
  • Child-birth / pregnancy
  • Weight loss
  • Natural ageing process
  • One breast that is bigger/smaller or hangs lower
  • Breasts that are no longer firm
  • Breasts that appear “flat” or “empty”
  • Asymmetrical breasts
  • Deflated breasts with loose skin and sagginess/sagging/lost elasticity

A mastopexy is a simple procedure to rejuvenate the appearance of the breasts. The procedure will mean your breasts can look and feel firmer, with more volume, fullness and shape. It is often performed alongside breast enlargement, breast reduction or (mini) abdominoplasty to help achieve the desired look.

Why do I need to have breast uplift surgery privately?

The NHS does not commonly carry out breast uplift procedures unless there is an associated and significant distress or pain. For this reason, many women choose to have a mastopexy procedure done at a private healthcare clinic such as Pall Mall Cosmetics. There is no waiting list, and you do not need any referral to have an operation performed.

We can ensure your safety at our CQC (care quality commission) regulated hospital in Newton-le-Willows and city centre clinics in Manchester, Liverpool or Leeds. Our surgeons mostly come from the NHS, so you get the same quality of surgery, but in a safe, clean and professional private clinical environment.

Our surgeons also strive for excellence, being members of BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) and BAPRAS (British Association of Plastic & Reconstructive Aesthetic Surgeons). A clear demonstration of our ability to meet the gold standard of care you would expect from an elite surgical hospital.

What type of anaesthetic is used during breast uplift surgery?

For this surgery you will be placed under general anaesthetic and monitored closely throughout the whole surgery. This is a controlled state of unconsciousness to ensure you don’t feel pain or move while surgery is being carried out.
