We caught up with Dan (he/him) to see how his recovery has been going after FTM top surgery.

Top Surgery Recovery Case Study
Dan is now around six weeks post chest masculinisation surgery using a double incision technique with free nipple grafts. At this stage, he says things are starting to feel much more settled - both physically and emotionally - as he adjusts to his new chest and the way it has changed his day-to-day life.
Recovery Experience
Dan describes the first few days after surgery as the most challenging part of recovery, mainly because he’s a natural side sleeper and found it uncomfortable having to sleep upright. He got through this initial period with simple distractions like watching TV.
Around 10 days after surgery, once his dressings and compression vest were removed, Dan noticed a clear improvement. From that point on, his comfort and mobility improved quite quickly, and he describes the rest of his recovery as steady and fairly straightforward.
Overall, he feels the process has gone more smoothly than he expected.

Care Experience
Dan received his surgery through Pall Mall Medical and says he felt well supported throughout the whole process.
He highlights how easy it was to communicate with the clinical team and how quickly he received responses when he had questions. That level of accessibility helped make the experience feel calmer and less stressful overall.
He also reflects on how medical environments can sometimes feel uncomfortable for trans patients, but says he consistently felt treated with respect and professionalism throughout his care.

Life After Surgery
For Dan, the biggest changes haven’t just been medical - they’ve been in everyday life.
Before surgery, chest binding had a big impact on his routine. Exercise was limited, and anything more intense than light activity outside the home often felt uncomfortable or was avoided altogether. This also added to feelings of dysphoria in everyday situations.
Since surgery, he’s been able to return to full physical activity, including running and more strenuous exercise, without restriction or discomfort. He describes this freedom as one of the most meaningful improvements in his quality of life.
He also talks about the smaller, everyday moments - waking up without needing to think about binding, or showering without avoiding his reflection. Over time, these experiences have shifted from being emotionally loaded to something that now feels more normal and relieving.
Decision-Making and Research
When choosing his surgeon, Dan spent time researching outcomes and reading experiences shared by other trans people online, including forums such as r/topsurgery and platforms like TransBucket. He also looked at independent reviews on sites like Trustpilot and iwantgreatcare.
He says he was particularly influenced by consistent positive feedback from other trans men, as well as the surgeon’s reputation and experience in gender-affirming procedures.
Before & After Top Surgery

Patient Reflection
At six weeks post-surgery, Dan describes feeling a strong sense of relief and satisfaction with his results. While still early in recovery, he says he’s becoming increasingly comfortable in his body and more at ease in everyday life.
Rather than one sudden change, he describes the process as a gradual shift - where discomfort and dysphoria have slowly been replaced by a quieter sense of normality.
Overall, he reflects very positively on both his surgical outcome and the support he received throughout his care.
