Cosmetic Crusaders Petition for stronger regulation of overseas cosmetic surgery

Speaking about the dangers that can occur when opting to endure low-cost cosmetic surgery procedures, Dr Theobalds, private GP at Pall Mall and seasoned General Practitioner, with experience in emergency departments, said: “Cosmetic surgery can be transformative when done properly. However, without the necessary safety measures, it can lead to tragic consequences both physically and emotionally.

“We see patients drawn in by deals for half-price tummy tucks or breast augmentations,” Dr Theobalds notes, “but these clinics often don’t match the safety standards required in the UK.

“Language barriers can also lead to misunderstandings, and hygiene standards are often compromised. People don’t realise they may be treated by unqualified practitioners, and unfortunately, some end up paying the ultimate price - their life.”

We also spoke with Mr Barnes, a highly experienced GMC-registered surgeon at Pall Mall, whose firsthand experience in treating the devastating consequences of botched overseas procedures with the NHS, states "In my NHS practice I see a lot of patients who have come in from having breast surgery abroad. A few weeks down the line they have a wound healing problem, and they're stuck on their own and have turned to the NHS to help."

This highlights the significant burden placed on both patients and the NHS. Not only do patients suffer from complications and require extensive aftercare, but botched surgeries also cost the NHS a staggering £4.8 million annually.
