What to expect, from first chat to full recovery

It’s completely normal to have questions about intimate surgery. Our patient coordinators, nurses and surgeons are here to support you at every step, whether you’re just researching or ready to book.

Your confidential consultation

You’ll meet your surgeon in a private, relaxed setting. They’ll listen to your concerns, carry out a gentle examination and explain your options, along with the benefits and risks. Ask as many questions as you like, and take as much time as you need to decide.

Your personalised plan

Your surgeon will tailor the procedure to your anatomy and what you’d like to achieve.

Before your surgery

We’ll invite you in for a pre-op check to make sure you’re well and ready for surgery. It’s also a chance to talk through anything that’s on your mind.

On the day

Your surgery takes place at our private hospital in Newton-le-Willows or at ASET. Your nurse and surgeon will welcome you and show you to your private en-suite room. The procedure is carried out under [general / local] anaesthetic and usually takes around [X minutes]. Your surgeon will carefully remove the excess skin and close the area with dissolvable stitches.

After your surgery

We’ll see you for check-ups, usually at weeks 1, 2 and 6, so you can feel reassured that you’re healing well.

Aftercare

You can call our nursing team 24/7 with any questions, and you’re welcome to attend extra check-ups whenever you need them.

Your recovery timeline

Everyone heals at their own pace, and your surgeon will guide you through your recovery. As a guideline, here’s what you can expect:

Click each milestone below to see what’s happening at each stage.

The first few days

Days 1–3

What to expect

Expect swelling, some bruising and tenderness.

Looking after yourself

Rest as much as you can, with short walks around the house to help your circulation. Follow your hygiene advice carefully.

One week on

Week 1

What to expect

Swelling is still noticeable, but discomfort usually starts to ease.

Looking after yourself

Avoid sitting for long periods. A cushion with a hollow centre can help.

Two to three weeks in

Weeks 2–3

What to expect

Bruising usually fades and swelling starts to go down.

Looking after yourself

Many people feel ready to return to desk-based work.

Four to six weeks in

Weeks 4–6

What to expect

Most of the swelling settles and the area starts to look more natural.

Looking after yourself

Avoid vigorous exercise, cycling, horse riding and sex until around six weeks, or until your surgeon says you’re healing well.

Your settled result

3–12 Months

What to expect

The tissues soften, scars mature and your final result settles. Scars usually become fine and discreet.

Frequently Asked Questions.

You can also find answers to some of the most common questions about Hood reduction below.

Does clitoral hood reduction affect sensation?

The procedure only removes excess hood skin, and the clitoris itself isn’t changed. As with any intimate surgery, there’s a risk of changes in sensation. Your surgeon will explain this fully at your consultation.

Can I have it without a Labiaplasty?

Yes. Some women only have excess skin around the clitoral hood. Your surgeon will help you understand your options.

How long does recovery take?

Most people return to desk-based work within 2–3 weeks. You’ll need to avoid sex, cycling and vigorous exercise for around six weeks, or until your surgeon confirms you’re healing well.

Will there be scarring?

There will be small scars, but they’re usually well hidden in the natural folds of skin and fade over time.

What are the risks?

All surgery carries some risk. For clitoral hood reduction, this can include bleeding, infection, swelling, scarring, asymmetry and changes in sensation. Your surgeon will go through the risks and benefits with you in detail.

Is there an age limit?

We only carry out clitoral hood reduction for people aged 18 and over, as the area continues to develop into early adulthood.

Can I have it before having children?

Yes. If the area is causing you physical discomfort, you can have the procedure before having children. Your surgeon can talk through how pregnancy and childbirth might affect your result.
